The road from Marrakech to Merzouga is the classic route to the Moroccan Sahara — and one of the great drives on earth. What you see on the way
Heading south from Marrakech you climb the Tizi n'Tichka, the highest major pass in Morocco, with sweeping views back over the plains. Beyond it lies Aït Benhaddou, the fortified earthen village that has starred in countless films, and Ouarzazate, home to Morocco's film studios.
The road then follows the Dades Valley and the "Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs," threads the sheer walls of the Todra Gorge, and runs on through Tinghir and Erfoud to Merzouga, where the dunes appear on the horizon like a wall of gold.
A night in the Sahara
At Merzouga you leave the car and ride a camel over the first dunes as the sun sets — one of those moments that stays with you for life. Dinner is served at a desert camp, there is often drumming around the fire, and you sleep in a comfortable tent far from any light or noise.
The next morning you can watch the sunrise over Erg Chebbi before the drive back. Many travellers continue from here to Fes rather than returning to Marrakech, which makes a perfect one-way desert crossing.

How long does Marrakech to Merzouga take?
The drive is around 8–9 hours without stops, so we strongly recommend spreading it over at least two days. Most travellers do a three-day round trip, which allows time for the sights and a relaxed night in the desert.
Can I do Marrakech to Merzouga in one day?
It is possible to drive it in a day, but you would arrive tired and see little on the way. To actually enjoy the desert and the kasbah road, plan two or three days.
Can you drop us in Fes instead of returning?
Yes. A one-way Marrakech-to-Merzouga-to-Fes route is very popular and avoids repeating the same road. We simply continue north after the desert.
