Rather than backtracking, you travel south from Fes through the Middle Atlas and the Ziz Valley to the dunes of Merzouga, then west along the kasbah road to Marrakech.
It's the perfect one-way route: you see the desert, the gorges and the great passes, and never drive the same road twice.

South from Fes to the Sahara
Leaving Fes, you climb through the cedar forests around Ifrane and cross the Middle Atlas, then descend the palm-lined Ziz Valley to the pre-desert. By evening you reach Merzouga, swap the car for a camel, and ride into the dunes of Erg Chebbi for a night under the stars.
West along the kasbah road
From the desert you head west through the Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley, past Ouarzazate and the film-set kasbah of Aït Benhaddou, before crossing the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka to Marrakech. Every day brings a new landscape.
